The role.

Perception

Help vessels understand what is around them. Build perception that works with the glare, reflections, fog and changing light of inland waterways.

What you will work on

  • Develop detection, segmentation and tracking across camera and radar observations.
  • Build datasets and evaluate performance in glare, reflection, fog and changing light.
  • Connect perception outputs to the onboard world model, accounting for latency and uncertainty.

Core technical skills

  • Computer vision fundamentals: image geometry, calibration, object detection and tracking.
  • Machine learning practice: training and validation splits, metrics, overfitting and error analysis.
  • Numerical reasoning with arrays, probability and noisy sensor measurements.

Coding experience

  • Hands-on Python experience building and evaluating a perception or machine learning pipeline.
  • Experience with tools such as NumPy, OpenCV and PyTorch, or comparable libraries.
  • Readable, testable code; Git workflows; reproducible experiments; and confidence debugging on Linux.

Useful additional experience

  • C++ for performance-sensitive components; GPU inference or model optimisation.
  • Camera/radar fusion, multi-object tracking, robotics or edge deployment.
  • A project showing how you measured accuracy, handled a failure case and improved the result.
